Miles de ciudadanos han ocupado pacíficamente Wall Street, uno de los epicentros mundiales de poder financiero y corrupción. Ellos son la última chispa de un nuevo movimiento por la justicia social que se está extendiendo como la pólvora, desde Madrid a Santiago, y a Jerusalén, pasando por otras 146 ciudades que se siguen sumando. Pero ahora necesitan de todo el apoyo posible para lograr resultados.

Mientras las familias trabajadoras siguen corriendo con los gastos de la crisis financiera causada por las élites corruptas, los manifestantes están exigiendo democracia real, justicia social y un freno a la corrupción. Sin embargo, se encuentran sometidos a una gran presión de las autoridades, y algunos medios de comunicación les están menospreciando, poniéndoles la etiqueta de grupos marginales. Si millones de nosotros unimos ahora nuestras voces desde todos los rincones del mundo, redoblaremos su valentía, y les mostraremos a los medios de comunicación y a los dirigentes políticos que las protestas son parte de un masivo movimiento ciudadano que demanda cambios.

La actual oleada mundial de protestas es el capítulo más reciente de la historia del poder ciudadano global durante este año. En Egipto, la gente tomó la Plaza Tahrir hasta derrocar a su dictador. En la India, la huelga de hambre de un solo hombre inspiró a millones de ciudadanos a manifestarse en las calles, doblegando al gobierno y obteniendo importantes logros en la lucha contra la corrupción. Durante meses, los griegos han protestado sin respiro contra los injustos recortes sociales. En España, decenas de miles de "indignados" desafiaron la prohibición de manifestarse antes de las últimas elecciones, acampando en la Puerta del Sol de Madrid y en otras ciudades contra la corrupción política y la gestión de los gobernantes. Y este verano, a lo largo y ancho de Israel, ciudadanos han alzado campamentos en protesta contra el alza de los precios de las viviendas y demandando justicia social.

Cada uno de estos episodios nacionales están conectados, formando parte de un relato global que refleja un esfuerzo común que busca el fin a la complicidad entre políticos y élites corruptas. Son ellos los que, en muchos países, han contribuido a desencadenar una devastadora crisis financiera, y sin embargo ahora pretenden que sean las familias trabajadoras quienes paguen la factura de la crisis. Este gigantesco movimiento puede lograr no solo que la carga de la recesión no recaiga sobre los más vulnerables, sino que también puede ayudar a re-establecer el equilibrio de poder a favor de la democracia y contra la corrupción. Con cada nueva manifestación, desde El Cairo hasta Nueva York, es evidente el clamor ciudadano por un gobierno responsable y transparente que sirva a su gente.
